Therefore shall the land mourn, and every one that dwelleth therein shall languish, with the beasts of the field, and with the fowls of heaven; yea, the fishes of the sea also shall be taken away.
A ideia de que a culpa humana faz a própria terra "definhar", atingindo animais, aves e peixes, reflete a concepção do Antigo Oriente de que a ordem moral e a ordem natural estão entrelaçadas: o pecado do povo desorganiza o cosmos. Motivo semelhante aparece em outros profetas (ex.: Jr 12:4).
